Dr. Mark Marner Named Hospital Hero

Dr. Mark MarnerDr. Mark Marner, a respected physician leader in the Fort Dodge community for over 35 years, has been named a Hospital Hero by the Iowa Hospital Association. Recognized for selflessly serving their hospitals and communities, Hospital Heroes are honored for their outstanding work and dedication to patients, communities and co-workers.

Dr. Mark Marner came to Fort Dodge as a young physician to join a friend and colleague in private practice at Associated Internists, PC. He was an integral part of this practice until 2011. At that time, he joined the Hospital Medicine Department at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center and worked as a Hospitalist and Assistant Medical Director until December 2016. He is currently the Clinical Documentation Integrity Physician Advisor and Assistant Medical Director for Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Marner is highly respected by the medical staff. His dedication and passion for the profession he loves is evident throughout UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge. He has served as a mentor to young physicians as they come out of their residency programs and they value his input, drawn from years of clinical practice. Senior leadership has relied on him for advice and guidance as it strives to meet the challenges of health care today.

In addition to his private practice and work as a hospitalist, Dr. Marner is known for his work with hospice. Dr. Marner once commented that at the beginning of his career, he considered it a failure when a patient died, but as he grew in his career, he considered it both an honor and privilege to sit with someone as they were dying. Dr. Marner was often seen praying at the bedside with his patients. They were so comforted by his ability and willingness to sit quietly with them or pray with them and their family. It is no surprise that Dr. Marner also receives high scores in the area of patient satisfaction.

Dr. Marner is also a champion for philanthropy. He believes philanthropy plays a role in healing and is a vehicle for gratitude. He also believes that philanthropy can change the level of care provided by an institution. Two examples of Dr. Marner's generosity include Dr. Marner and his wife, RaeAnne Frey Marner, serving as co-chairs for the $2.5 million capital campaign to build the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, an eight-bed, free standing, inpatient hospice facility. The campaign raised $2.8 million in six months. Dr. Marner and RaeAnne were also active in the $5 million capital campaign for the Trinity Cancer Center. $5.2 million was raised in nine months. In both campaigns, Dr. Marner was a champion, providing direction and influence along with significant financial support. Dr. Marner is known for his integrity, for his ability to listen and advocate on behalf of his patients and for his commitment to provide an enhanced health care environment for his patients.

Additionally, you will find Dr. Marner giving his time and talent back to the community in numerous other ways. He has served on the Administrative Board of Trinity United Methodist Church, has taught Sunday school to 9th - 12th grade students and was chair of the Pastor/Staff-Parish Relations Committee. He currently participates in the Trinity Caring Ministry, visiting six elderly church members bimonthly who live in a retirement community. He sings with the Trinity Singers, and has been an active member of a group called the Sonshine Singers for several years.

Dr. Mark Marner is an invaluable asset to UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge. We congratulate him and his family on this much deserved award. He is indeed our Hospital Hero!

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Trinity Foundation or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

Tax on the growth in value of an asset—such as real estate or stock—since its original purchase.

Securities, real estate or any other property having a fair market value greater than its original purchase price.

Real estate can be a personal residence, vacation home, timeshare property, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and Trinity Foundation where you agree to make a gift to Trinity Foundation and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
