Dr. Mike Lee, nephrologist with Trimark Physicians Group, thanks the group for their support after the Swing for a Cure golf outing.

It was a fruitful summer for Trinity Health Foundation. The Foundation was the beneficiary of several events that raised awareness and funds for the Diabetes Center and the Cancer Center at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Golf Outing Helps Families Impacted by Diabetes
The 7th Annual Swing for a Cure golf outing was held on June 29 at the Fort Dodge Country Club. The weather was beautiful and 40 teams participated and enjoyed a fun-filled event.

Swing for a Cure was initiated by John and Christy Nielsen in response to their personal experience with the Trinity Diabetes Center. After their son, Colby, was diagnosed with type I diabetes, the Diabetes Center was instrumental in teaching the entire family how to take care of the disease and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Until a cure is found, the Nielsens have made it their priority to help raise funds for the education of children with diabetes and their families. Funds raised by the event are used to provide diabetes education for patients, families and community members.

It also enables the Diabetes Center to provide sponsorships so that children who are newly diagnosed with diabetes can attend Camp Hertko Hollow in Boone, Iowa. Camp Hertko Hollow gives children with diabetes an educational and recreational camping experience that promotes diabetes management skills so they can gain independence and develop a positive attitude for controlling diabetes.

Angel Ride and Dragon Boat Bash Benefit Cancer Center
The Angel Ride to Save the TaTa's and the 16th Annual Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash events benefited the Cancer Center at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

The Angel Ride, a motorcycle fun run to raise money for breast cancer patients was held on July 14. Funds from the Angel Ride also assist in providing tote bags for breast cancer patients after surgery. The bags are filled with special comfort items such as camisoles, underarm pillows and journals.

Funds from the silent auction and Quack for the Cure held at the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash will help support general cancer services at Trinity Cancer Center and provide medication, wigs, gas cards, lodging, taxi service and funds to help with miscellaneous expenses not covered by insurance.

Thank You!
"It was a great summer," says Shannon McQuillen, Executive Director for Trinity Health Foundation. "These were all wonderful events with tremendous community and volunteer support. We are thrilled to have the additional funding to assist the Diabetes Center and the Cancer Center. We are especially grateful to Brandt, Nielsen and Associates; Angel Ride to Save the TaTa's; and the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Association. It is heartwarming to see the community working to support their local hospital."

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Trinity Foundation or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

Tax on the growth in value of an asset—such as real estate or stock—since its original purchase.

Securities, real estate or any other property having a fair market value greater than its original purchase price.

Real estate can be a personal residence, vacation home, timeshare property, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and Trinity Foundation where you agree to make a gift to Trinity Foundation and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
