What Your Generosity Made Possible in 2012

The end of the year is near, and along with the holidays and winter weather, it brings a time for reflection on the past year and anticipation for the new year.

As we look back on 2012, we feel incredibly blessed to have had the support and commitment of so many passionate and generous donors. Your unwavering support is one of the essential ingredients needed to create a progressive and strong health system.

As a contributor to Trinity Health Foundation, you play an integral role in the quality and compassionate care that the Trinity family delivers. Your gifts ensure that you, your family and your friends receive the best care. For that, we are incredibly grateful.

The Trinity family consistently provides quality care to our patients. It is through your generosity that we are able to achieve a higher level of care each and every day. Your gifts allow us to deliver the best outcome—for every patient, every time. Here are some examples of purchases your generosity has made possible.

Trauma Weigh Bed. The foundation purchased a trauma weigh bed for the Emergency Department, which is used for patients who are critically ill or injured. Patients can be weighed without being moved, which enables staff to administer the correct dosage of medications and also give accurate weights for helicopter transports. The trauma cots also offer clear-view technology to enable radiological films.

Pocketalkers. The foundation purchased several Pocketalkers to be used throughout the hospital for our hard-of-hearing population. This is a versatile, high-quality, assistive listening device designed to improve communication in difficult listening situations. It delivers clear, distinct sound while its large, manageable controls provide for easy operation. The Pocketalkers are immediately available to anyone who needs one and allow patients to participate in their plan of care.

Clinical Pastoral Education. The foundation continues to support the Clinical Education program at Trinity. This program is accredited by the National Education Association through the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education and provides accredited training to area clergy and lay persons who are doing pastoral care in local congregations, institutions and communities. The program is directed and supervised by an ACPE Certified Supervisor and requires a minimum of 400 supervised hours of clinical pastoral experience. Support of this program reaffirms Trinity's history and commitment to spiritual care for our patients.

As we look forward to 2013, we are optimistic that you will continue to see the value in supporting Trinity Health Foundation and the impact your gifts have on the health of our community. For more than 100 years, the philanthropic nature of our community has enriched the services and medical expertise offered by Trinity Regional Medical Center. Your gifts also ensure that individuals in our community are able to access health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Donations to the foundation also provide needed transportation, medications and medical equipment for individuals with limited resources.

As you evaluate your year-end giving, we hope you will find Trinity Health Foundation to be an effective and meaningful reflection of your charitable goals. All gifts to Trinity Health Foundation are tax-deductible. Gifts postmarked by Dec. 31 will be credited to 2012.

On behalf of Trinity Health Foundation, we thank you for partnering with us to bring the very best in quality health care to those in our community. Please accept our warmest wishes for a healthy holiday season and a happy new year.

able to be changed or cancelled

A revocable living trust is set up during your lifetime and can be revoked at any time before death. They allow assets held in the trust to pass directly to beneficiaries without probate court proceedings and can also reduce federal estate taxes.

cannot be changed or cancelled

tax on gifts generally paid by the person making the gift rather than the recipient

the original value of an asset, such as stock, before its appreciation or depreciation

the growth in value of an asset like stock or real estate since the original purchase

the price a willing buyer and willing seller can agree on

The person receiving the gift annuity payments.

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Trinity Foundation or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

Tax on the growth in value of an asset—such as real estate or stock—since its original purchase.

Securities, real estate or any other property having a fair market value greater than its original purchase price.

Real estate can be a personal residence, vacation home, timeshare property, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Trinity Foundation as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and Trinity Foundation where you agree to make a gift to Trinity Foundation and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
